Orion 13.5 brushlessNoticed on the official Orion website that they manufacture two 13.5 brushless motors - one called 'Race'and one called 'Stock'. When I looked at the one I had obtained from HK it did have 'Race' on it. Couldn't work out the difference based on the explanations on the website so e-mailed them for an explanation. Here is their response:-
'So the Race 13.5 is basically an outlaw 13.5 which may technically evolve regularly, the Stock 13.5 is built following the Brushless Stock motor rules and has to be submitted to the various federations for homologation, so if you are going to race at events which use the official “stock class” rules you have to get the Stock 13.5.'
Not sure I fully understand it but looks like the 'Race' motor is the better of the two options for us over on this side of the pond.

Ummmm Yep Taken from a reliable Website
ORION ORI28134 Vortex 13.5 Racing 2008 Brushless Motor
Fast Race version of 13.5 Brushless motor.
This is faster than most 13.5 brushless motros and possibly the fastest.
Shows proper timing marks on the can and back plate for adjustment.
Team Orion’s Vortex Race Brushless motor has finally arrived! Brushless technology increases power output and efficiency to push vehicles to faster speeds with increased run times. With no brushes, springs, or commutators to maintain, drivers can spend more time improving their driving skills and car set-ups rather than performing motor rebuilds. And its versatile design allows it to be used with today’s leading sensored and sensorless brushless ESCs.
And the other one
ORION ORI28141 13.5T 2008 Brushless Motor
Equivalent to 27 Turn Brush Stock motor
Vortex 2008 Brushless Sensored Stock motor 13.5T
The new STOCK BL range is heavily based on the new RACE motors designed by Oscar Jansen while still following all the new regulations for the BL stock classes!
So your Super Fast 13.5 Race is Illeagle then Grey Fox & I also belive the Captain is running one too ........
Note the Race version does not state 27 turn equivalent !!!!!!!

Hmmm Ian,sometimes best to keep 'mum'.
Especially as i may be scrutineering at our STCC in a couple of weeks.
But then again,i believe the rules for the STCC are 'Any commercially available' motor,so go for it.
Will be good to see 'reasonably local' boys at the sharp end.

This is the problem for so called 27T equivalent brushless motor. As the BRCA no longer run stock nationals and therefore don't legislate for this type of motor, it can only be illegal if there were rules relating to its' construction and even then only for a BRCA event!
As you say Paul, it is commercially available and labelled as 13.5 so is OK for the STCC and anywhere else that allows them to be run (which I hope Colchester does as I'll be there tomorrow weather permitting)
Strictly speaking 13.5 isn't 27T equivalent, that goes to the 17.5 motors.
This could open up a whole new debate!
