Umm not quite sure why ????????

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Is that bumper conected to the shell I can't quite see ?????????????

Looks like it has been cut down into a U shape only - must admit I can't see why they would want to do it other than to try to save a bit of weight.

I guess that in a crash the normal bumper would compress but then till transfer the impact straight to the chassis.

In this case, after the flex of the shell there are little V pieces of what is probably lexan (like little springs) which then absorb a little more before transferring the impact onto the bumber. With the u shape I guess the bumper would not only compress but also the prongs would bend absorbing more impact prior to transfer to the chassis.

So unless the ipact was a pole, right in between the prongs, which may just be able to impart all the impact to the chassis if you're luck was zero, I would suggest that it's probably more efficient.
