How long is a piece of string????
Some would say that the STS range of cheaper ones(£50 upwards)are good value, and they are,but you just dont get the same performance, and there's nothing worse than being slaughtered on the straights.
I have 2 engines and love them both.
1.Picco P1-R ,got it from Demon £129 i think it was,and its a beauty. On his website he has another listed at £99 which is similar to mine, its the previous model.
2.I got an LRP 'Team Spec 2' off the bay,bnip,for a bargain £65.Its a discontinued £180 worth,but is excellent.
I would suggest that you dont buy a second-hand engine unless you know its exact history. One persons idea of 'running-in' can be soooo different to anothers.
As for glow plugs, most of the 'Race' engines are turbo. If i'm honest i dont really know what benefit a turbo head gives over a normal one but its most likely better compression and therefore performance. For our class and racing in this climate most people i know use a 'No.6' plug.I use 'RB' ones but any of the main makes (nosram, picco, rossi)will be as good.

The difference the plug types makes related to the seal with the engine head. A standard plug seals with the brass washer, so if you take the head off the engine and look at the 'burn room' where the plug sits it will be slightly proud of the surface and will usually have the bottom of the threads showing slightly. If you then do the same with a turbo head you'll see that as the seal is at the taper end of the plug nothing protrudes into the chamber and it has an almost perfect continuity across its surface.
When the compression stroke starts in one of these engines the air and fuel mixture is already in the cylinder and it is then compressed until the pressure is high enough that it is ignited by the glo-plug. With a standard plug the irregularities caused by it at the top of the 'burn room' mean the fuel and air mixture clumps and when ignited the flame front is not uniform across the chamber. This means you can't run as high compression or as advanced ignition timing without running the risk of detonation or pre-ignition. With a turbo plug this flame front is much more uniform, so you can run a higher compression with a more advanced timing. This gives you more revs and thus more power than with a standard plug.
The old GO .21 engine used to be a martyr for this, you had to run two brass shims with the standard head to get the plug out of the combustion chamber. When they brought out a turbo head it improved the engine no end, gave it loads more top end and made it much more consistent across a multiple tank final.

Well, too many years racing Nitro do this kind of thing to you...
Now that you're into nitro you'll have to come and try some rallycross. I should hopefully be getting one of the new Hong Nor X2-CRs next year, so if you bring a pair of servos and radio gear you could run my spare car...
